when the above interview was filmed which was not very long after the shooting the term grassy knoll had not yet been coined .

the above video is a short video , there are longer versions . but in these videos you will hear bill newman being asked about the shots . the presenter asking where he thought the shots came from ? newman replies UP THERE ON THE HILL . the presenter replies BACK THERE BY THE OVERPASS ? . newman then replies and corrects him saying NO , NOT THAT FAR BACK , UP ON THE HILL THERE .

above bill says a shot came from behind . lone nut advocates have tried to twist things here by asserting that newman had his back to the depository and so they assert that newman was saying he heard a shot from the direction of the depository .
that is not at all what newman was saying . in the above video you will see newman being asked DID HE LOOK TOWARDS THE DEPOSITORY HAVING HEARD THE SHOTS ? this is a reasonable question to ask , after all if newman thought any or all shots came from  that direction he would surely have looked that way , its human nature . but new replied NO , I HAD NO NEED TO LOOK THAT WAY . newman was in a pretty straight line below zapruder . he was stood on a concrete plinth pretty close to the knoll fence , a short wall , the knoll steps etc seperated him from the knoll fence .

for the most part of the shooting jfk was coming down elm towards newman and so newman faced uphill . naturally as jfk passed him he turned to his right , and about the time of the head shot film shows he had turned right and he looks to have his back pretty much to zapruder . in the above video he points with his right hand over his his right shoulder , while he was not specific he was pointing to a general area from the area of the pergola where zapruder was to the area of the knoll fence to zapruders right . and lets be clear here , he said very shortly after the shooting that atleast one shot came from UP ON THE HILL. so while he was not specific (something newman has always maintained , some people i guess just prefer not to be drawn into conspiracy talk etc )  in pointing to the knoll fence in the above films he most certainly never said any shots came from the depository , in fact he said he had no reason to even look up there .
